  • So Street: My journey from streetwear to high fashion and back. Part 7

All the events of the prior months had started to take a toll on me.  I know now it is all part of the business, that's why so many designers don't last or become dependant on drugs and alcohol...they are all drugs by the way; starting from over the counter pills all the way to Heroine, Ice, opiates, booze, cigarettes, chocolate, and the list goes on...

...And so picking up where I left off with part five of my story I can say with  complete assurance, that the same held true back then, but maybe my sense of self-discipline wasn't nearly as developed, or I was focusing on everything else but the "now". It may sound as a cliche' but unless we take care of what's happening now with complete undivided attention, the future may not turn out as expected or for that matter, it may not turn out at all.

I intended to move Nistka forward, to bring my views on fashion to a wider audience, to be amongst the influentials designers that would create trends and styles and ideas that would eventually filter down to the mass markets.

I recall walking into a an event for Alexander McQueen somewhere in the East Village, he would be showing in New York later on that year for the first time. As I walked through the wall of people gathered in an expansive loft space with music blaring, I remember seeing a few of my show programs used for coasters, I think that single instant was probably the most validating moment of the whole week

... the visit lasted about an hour, upon his departure, he bowed a few more times and left us with orders totally well over $750,000.00. Not bad for an afternoon take...I instantly became that much more attractive to most people that I came across that day and for most of the remaining days of the show...success leaves a scent upon you that makes people turn around and say "hey, I want that...I want to touch it, fuck it, eat it".

I remember dancing inside a DC3 parked somewhere in the desert, drinking Absolut Martinis of all colors and flavours (Absolut Vodka threw some of the best parties during the show) surrounded by scantily clad models while drugs and laughter abounded.

  • Nistka's FRESH NIKE

...I mean in the end it is all about personal taste, today really there are no boundaries, we have every option at our fingertips, we can reinvent, reinterpret, mashup, sample and recreate. I think absolute creation is difficult to achieve, everything I come up with had a previous existence in an alternate world, somewhere between the past and the present, the future is always unattainable we can think about it but it really doesn't follow anyone's expectations. We just think it does at times.
